FAQ

Q: I have a Mac and a PC. Can they both connect to the internet through my DSL line?

A: Yes! To navigate through this expanse called the Internet, computers use TCP/IP. Routers and hubs and websites don't care what kind of computer you have. Just as long as you have the correct transmission protocol installed.

Q: My ISP said I need to upgrade to a new MAC to use their software.

A: Most providers want you to use new equipment so their configuration software will work. As long as we can install a network card, we can connect you to the intrnet via DSL.

Q: It's 65 feet from one computer to another. I can only find cables 50 feet long. Can I buy a coupling to connect 2 cables?

A: No. There is no coupling. A hub can be used but, 2 pre-made cables and a hub can cost as much as $100. Duarte Systems makes all our own cables. Total cost for parts would be about $50, depending on hub placement.

Q: Do you have a price list?

A: Sorry but no. Since every installation is different each one is priced accordingly

Home and Office Networking

If you own multiple PCs, and or Mac's you have probably thought about how great it would be if your computers could talk to each other. With your computers connected, you could:
• Share a single printer between computers
• Share a single Internet connection among all the computers in your home
• Access shared files such as photographs, MP3s, spreadsheets and documents on any computer in the house
• Play games that allow multiple users at different computers
• Send the output of a device like a DVD player or Webcam to your other computer(s)

Ways to Connect

You can connect your home computers in a variety of ways:

Ethernet over Cable

• "Officially" wire your house with data cables by hiding all the network cable in the walls (especially easy if you are building a new home)
• Run cables across the floor between computers in the same room

* If your home has a raised foundation and or an attic, cables can be run in these spaces and dropped in the walls to a wall plate installed on the wall.

Wireless Ethernet

• Install some form of wireless networking technology

Combination of Cable and Wireless

• Wireless and cable installed in combination with each other.

Sneakernet

• Walk diskettes and CD-Rs back and forth (which is inexpensive but gets to be a drag)

Duarte Systems will install wireless on new systems only and no guarantee that it will work or continue to work is provided.

Cable systems are preferred to obtain maximum speed and connectivity and are guaranteed !!!
